Thousands of animals are killed each day, not for food, but for fun and luxury. Fun includes barbaric spectacles like bear baiting and bull fights, and luxury is when live animals are beaten half to death and their skin ripped off them while they are still conscious, just to make fur coats and fur trimmed hats. Apart from this, stabbing, poisoning, maiming of animals in the name of laboratory experiments and military training are a commonplace even when mechanical alternatives are available.
Even if you do not care for animals, surely, you do care for your children. Barbaric acts like this are not very different from what serial killers do or when innocent people are blasted to bits with explosives in the name of religion or freedom. The viciousness and sadism that goes into animal abuse is not likely to stop with just animals. All of society is affected by individuals without scruple, without mercy, without any recognizable human quality.
